Answers To Frequently Asked Questions

What payment methods do you accept?

As of January 1st 2021, we are only accepting cash payments.

When can you accept a deposit for a puppy?

Puppy selection normally occurs when the puppy’s eyes have opened and there can be some interaction with its surroundings. This usually happens when the pup is about 2 weeks old. When a puppy is “picked out,” a cash deposit shall be accepted.

Are you registered with the American Kennel Club?

Yes, we have been registered with the American Kennel Club since the very first littler we’ve bred.

Do buyers receive a certified veterinary health certificate?

No, all buyers will receive a booklet from our local veterinarian that will show what shots the puppy has received and what shots are due at their next vet appointment. A general health check is always completed at the puppy’s initial 6-week veterinary visit.

When will my new puppy be ready to come home with me?

Typically, we aim to keep the puppies together with their mom and siblings until they are 8 weeks old. This ensures adequate bonding and positive socialization with their parents and each other – behavior which is extremely beneficial for them.

Will my puppy be dewormed and vaccinated when I pick it up?

Pups receive their first vaccination at 6 weeks of age. They also get a nose to tail vet check just a few days before their go home date. You can also add plain yogurt to their kibble to help with an upset stomach (probiotics! this is good at any point during their life, and they love it!) You can also purchase dry probiotics to add to their food. Dogs and pups love the stuff, and it can encourage a stingy eater to eat too!

Do I have to register my puppy with the American Kennel Club?

You do not have to, but we strongly recommend that you do. If you ever decide to breed your pup – whether male or female – being registered with the American Kennel Club (AKC) allows the produced litter to also be registered.

Are your puppies trained to be show dogs, hunting dogs or field-trial dogs?

We do not breed to produce show dogs or field trial dogs or even hunting dogs. All of our adult dogs are strictly house pets, and all pups produced by R&B’s Labs are exactly that. We breed solely for pet companionship. However, most Labs, with the proper training and guidance, of course, can become whatever they are being trained to become. In the past, we’ve had pups who have gone on to become excellent retrievers in the field as well as wild game bird retrievers. We have also had pups who have gone on to become excellent assistance companions for the elderly and/or disabled. And of course, we’ve also provided pups that are simply wonderful family dogs – couch lying, under foot lying, and faithful. The kind of pet that provides unconditional love and loyalty to the entire family.

What is my puppy being fed during the time it is weened off of its mother's milk?

We feed our puppies Purina’s Puppy Chow Complete. Puppy Chow Complete is Purina’s signature blend specially formulated to give our pups all of the nutrients and calories needed to support their constantly developing bodies. The food is bite-sized and easy-to-chew and full of essential nutrients, like those found in mother’s milk. There’s lots of protein, calcium to support proper bone and joint development, antioxidants to support immune health, DHA to support brain & vision development, and it’s highly digestible. It’s a healthy balance specifically made for puppies and we’ve been using it for years.

I've picked out my pup and put down a deposit - can I come over and visit my puppy?

We encourage puppy visits as it promotes client/pup bonding. We do ask for appointments to be made at least a day or two in advance, and more specifically, not during the hours of 4 PM and 6 PM.

Will R&B’s Labradors of Chemung be available after the sale for consultation in regards to any puppy concerns?

Yes, without question. We are always available to answer your questions regarding your pup. We are also aware that there may be questions that we may not be qualified, medically or otherwise, to answer. In that event, we will, to the best of our ability, steer you in a direction that will answer your question or concern.

Our Story So Far

From How We Started To Where We Are Now

The beginning visions of R & B’s Labs started in mid July 2011 when we purchased our Botar. We had Labradors before him, but we were not really set up for any serious breeding facilities. Bringing “Bo” home started us thinking about having litters down the road. With the addition of Brandi in November of 2011 we set the groundwork for the “Bo & Brandi’s Way” which was the prelude to what has grown to be R & B’s Labradors of Chemung.

Bo and Brandi’s 1st litter in March of 2013 produced 8 beautiful pups and one of our granddaughters thought we should keep “Diamond”. We gave her to our granddaughters, but eventually returned to live with us. She became ill and crossed the Rainbow Bridge when she was only 5 years old. Diamond was a great addition to our Lab family and has been sorely missed by all of us whose heart she touched.

November 2015 saw DuPont Duey join our crew. Our “Gentle Giant” is the activist and instigator. He is loved by all and has given us lots of reasons to smile.

In February of 2016 we obtained “Layla” who is one of the sweetest chocolate lab females that has ever existed. She was very laid back and very shy and was not keen on the other dogs that shared our home with her especially her suitors… (Bo and/or Duey) She wanted no part of the mating process and adamantly let the boys know that.

March of 2017 brought us “Missy”. This sweet yellow gal was born to lick and provide us with daily good or bad events. There is never a dull moment with Missy in our fold.

January of 2019 blessed us with a descendent of our beloved Diamond. We named her “ABBY”. She is almost a carbon copy of her grandmother and every bit as lovable.
