Answers To Frequently Asked Questions

Do buyers receive a certified veterinary health certificate?

No, all buyers will receive a booklet from our local veterinarian that will show what shots the puppy has received and what shots are due at their next vet appointment. A general health check is always completed at the puppy’s initial 6-week veterinary visit.

Do I have to register my puppy with the American Kennel Club?

You do not have to, but we strongly recommend that you do. If you ever decide to breed your pup – whether male or female – being registered with the American Kennel Club (AKC) allows the produced litter to also be registered automatically as long as you have an unlimited registration application.

Are you registered with the American Kennel Club?

Yes, we have been registered with the American Kennel Club since the very first littler we’ve bred.

Will R&B’s Labradors of Chemung be available after the sale for consultation in regards to any puppy concerns?

Yes, without question. We are always available to answer your questions regarding your pup. We are also aware that there may be questions that we may not be qualified, medically or otherwise, to answer. In that event, we will, to the best of our ability, steer you in a direction that will answer your question or concern.

Are your puppies trained to be show dogs, hunting dogs or field-trial dogs?

We do not breed to produce show dogs or field trial dogs or even hunting dogs. All of our adult dogs are strictly house pets, and all pups produced by R&B’s Labs are exactly that. We breed solely for pet companionship. However, most Labs, with the proper training and guidance, of course, can become whatever they are being trained to become. In the past, we’ve had pups who have gone on to become excellent retrievers in the field as well as wild game bird retrievers. We have also had pups who have gone on to become excellent assistance companions for the elderly and/or disabled. And of course, we’ve also provided pups that are simply wonderful family dogs – couch lying, under foot lying, and faithful. The kind of pet that provides unconditional love and loyalty to the entire family.

What payment methods do you accept?

As of January 1st 2021, we are only accepting cash payments.

When will my new puppy be ready to come home with me?

Typically, we aim to keep the puppies together with their mom and siblings until they are 8 weeks old. This ensures adequate bonding and positive socialization with their parents and each other – behavior which is extremely beneficial for them.

When will you accept a deposit for a puppy?

Puppy selection normally occurs when the puppy’s eyes have opened and there can be some interaction with its surroundings. This usually happens when the pup is about 2 weeks old. When a puppy is “picked out,” a cash deposit shall be accepted.

What about worming and vaccination shots?

Pups are wormed starting at 2 weeks of age and are wormed every 2 weeks after that. We recommend that you take your pup to the vet for a “well puppy visit” when you get home (within 3 business days) because puppies CAN reinfest themselves in even the most sterile environments as ours (they don’t exactly watch where they walk, or play, or what they eat!)…or a visitor can walk into my house with eggs or spores on their shoes, and it can be transferred to the pups. Some spores are airborne….some are in rain water, some are in puddles outside in the yard (like giardia). This is why we are proactive in every way…and also ask you to be as well. Certain bacteria, such as coccidia and giardia, may not even show up in a stool sample, and can lie dormant for years even. BUT when a pup comes under stress…these bacteria replicate and can then show up after your pup goes home…it is NOT due to neglect or unsanitary conditions on the part of the breeder…these are animals, and these things happen. We also change our dogs water 3 times a day to ensure fresh water is available at all times. Adult dogs are better at maintaining these, where as pups are not and will require treatment.  All of our adult dogs are treated on a monthly basis to prevent intestinal worms and any intestinal bacteria. We also worm pups the day that they go home, and send treatment home with customers for giardia, 90% of the time if your pup is going to have an issue, it is going to be with giardia or coccidia. It does not go in the fridge, so you can keep it on hand for use down the road as well. Pups receive their first vaccination at 6 weeks of age. They also get a nose to tail vet check just a few days before their go home date. You can also add plain yogurt to their kibble to help with an upset stomach (probiotics! this is good at any point during their life, and they love it!) You can also purchase dry probiotics to add to their food. Dogs and pups love the stuff, and it can encourage a stingy eater to eat too!

What is my puppy being fed?

Purina Pro Plan Puppy formula. chicken and rice (Savor variety, orange & black bag). You will be sent home with a small freezer baggie to get them started, and a $5 off coupon for another bag of pro plan. If you are going to switch you pup to a different food, we recommend buying a small bag of pro plan to mix in with the new food and do a gradual mix in to switch them over.   We “free” feed  majority of our pups to ensure that everyone is getting enough to eat, especially during the weening process. A lot of pet homes like to continue on with this, while others want to break it into set meals. Every pup will be slightly different, but we recommend starting them off somewhere between 1/2 to 3/4 cup 3 x a day ( or 3/4 to 1 cup 2 x a day). As they grow their needs will increase, so if they act like they are truly starving, it is time to increase what they are fed.

Can I come and visit my puppy?

We no longer do this.
